The purpose of RSVP of Boone County is to recruit (click here for printable registration form), interview, and match senior volunteers with organizations that serve the needs of Boone County and the needs of the Columbia community . Since 1988 the Corporation for National and Community Service has funded the local RSVP chapter and has directed its staff in helping this community meet its most compelling needs by using the growing resource of senior volunteers.
In 2005, RSVP volunteers served more than 45,419 documented hours (click here for printable hours form) at 35 agencies in Boone County.
The 466 RSVP volunteers served Boone County community service organizations in the following areas: 24,000 hours in hospitals/medical centers/clinics; 7,500 hours in food collection and distribution; 1119 hours in schools and literacy programs; 3,300 hours making blankets for needy children and adults; 500 hours assisting in blood drives; 9,000 hours volunteering for one-time special projects and other social services.
Based on the Independent Sector’s valuation of the equivalent hourly wage for volunteers ($18.04/hour), the value of the RSVP donation of service to our community was $819,359! The huge value that the community received was much greater than the minimal cost the community paid.
The budget of the RSVP program is $84,456, of which $48,413 comes from federal funding. Thus, the program is an extraordinarily cost-effective way to meet community needs. |
